This is a timely and hugely important work: a comprehensive textbook covering one of the few remaining blind spots on the map of urological literature. It provides a comprehensive review of all urgent problems in Urology and includes first-class procedural drawings.

Emergencies in Urology is a comprehensive textbook covering one of the few remaining white spots on the map of urological literature. To date only a small number of publications have been dedicated to the topic of urgent and emergent problems in urology - important as these are in our daily clinical life. Therefore the editors, both of them internationally recognized urological experts, have taken the effort to present an in-depth study into virtually every possible urgent urological situation with which a urologist may be confronted today. Consequently, the book includes chapters on topics such as urological trauma, urosepsis, urinary obstruction, oncological emergencies, intra- and postoperative complications, acute problems in children, and many more.To obtain the best possible expertise in such a wide field, renowned expert authors have contributed their experience to this book. They did so not only by writing the regular book chapters but also by delivering short stories about urgent situations they encountered in their own professional life. These vignettes are one of the rare opportunities where experience can be relayed without restriction from one urological generation to the next.Much work has gone into the illustrations for the book. Foremost in this respect is the art of Stephan Spitzer, one of the leading medical illustrators of today. The result is a comprehensive, well-organized text, in which state-of-the-art know-how, didactic algorithms, personal experience and detailed illustrations are combined into a unique guide of how to manage urological emergencies.

Dr. Santucci is the Chief of Urology at the Detroit Receiving Hospital, one of the nation's first Level I trauma center and the only hospital built from the ground up to serve as a trauma hospital. He is an Assistant Professor at the Wayne State University and is a widely published expert in the field of trauma and emergency urology. Dr. Santucci also serves as the Director of the Center for Urologic Reconstruction(TM) at Detroit Receiving Hospital. The Center is a regional referral center for difficult cases in urologic reconstruction, including urethral injury, urethral stricture, and complex reconstructive problems of the bladder, ureters and kidneys. Dr. Hohenfellner is Chair of The Department of Urology of the University of Heidelberg, Medical School. His institution is consequently organized to function in a high-level interdisciplinary environment and addresses all the contemporary clinical challenges: urologic oncology, minimal invasive surgery, reconstructive surgery, pediatric urology, lower urinary tract dysfunction, stone disease and andrology. Dr. Hohenfellner is chairman of the EAU Working Group on Urologic Trauma. He is also the responsible representative of the German Urological Association to establish guidelines on Urologic Trauma.

From the reviews:

" ... the main strengths of the book include the unusually wide scope of topics which really could not be found in one text book before. The authors and editors have extensive experience with each topic and the reader can consider the discussion of each topic to be the 'gold standard.' The vignettes and the discussion of these cases are unique, personal stories and make the reader believe they are discussing the case with the author over a cup of coffee. The stories are impressive proof that persistent awareness and education are essential elements of a successful professional life." (Michael J. Metro, USA, in: UroToday, May 2007

"Hohenfellner and Santucci, with contributions of over 80 physicians-urologists, nephrologists, anaesthesiologists - produced an outstanding textbook which comprises an exhaustive survey of emergencies in urology. ... The textbook is richly illustrated with more than 300 figures and 160 tables and we recommend it to all urologists and practitioners involved in emergencies management." (Dr. Paul Meria, European Urology Today, December 2007/January 2008)

"The schedule of the chapters clearly demonstrates how that this book covers extensively the field of emergencies in Uological practice. ... The presentation is clear. ... This book is written by a panellist of specialists. ... That book must be recommended to every urologist and should be easily available in all emergency departments." (P. Bonnet, Acta Chrirugica Belgica, Issue 5, 2007)
