"The Thai Massage Workbook" is a companion volume to Pierce Salguero's "The Encyclopedia of Thai Massage", the best-selling book on Thai massage according to Amazon.com. Increasingly being used in Thai massage training programmes, this workbook is a student's companion to the Encyclopedia. It is a valuable teaching and learning tool for Thai massage courses, reproducing the images and numbering system found within the book, but allowing free space for student note-taking. The idea of making a companion workbook for books on massage in general is one that has been quite common. However, this has not extended to the field of Thai massage yet. This would make the Encyclopedia only the second book/workbook combination available for Thai massages students. This, plus the ongoing increase in sales of the Encyclopedia, will ensure that there will be a ready market for the workbook. In fact, the uniqueness of having a book-workbook combination will do much to attract more sales.
Lived and studied in Chiang Mai from 1997 to 2001, researching medical traditions, learning formally and informally about Thai culture, and exploring an interest in Buddhism through extended stays at meditation centers and monasteries-- exploring the history, philosophy, and practice of Thai medicine from both an academic and an practitioner's standpoint. Moved back to the U.S. in 2001 primarily to pursue graduate studies, and my research has remained focused on traditional Thai medicine. Recently completed Master's degree at the University of Virginia, and wrote my thesis on the interplay of elite and folk medicine in Thailand. Now working on a Ph.D. in the History of Medicine at the Johns Hopkins medical school, focusing again on Asian medicine. In 2002, founded Tao Mountain, a non-profit association of Thai massage and herbal medicine instructors--involved in organizing and supporting academic research and clinical trials to build bridges between Thai and modern Western medicine, and on providing professional instruction on Thai tradition to massage therapists and herbalists in the complementary health care industry. Published 3 other books with Findhorn Press and several articles in consumer magazines on Thai herbal and massage traditions, including a recent article on Thai Ayurveda in the 2006 Journal of the American Herbalists Guild. Also have an upcoming academic title, due out in early 2007 from Hohm Press (USA), entitled Traditional Thai Medicine: Buddhism, Animism, Ayurveda. Current Positions * Executive Director of the Tao Mountain Association of Traditional Thai Massage & Herbal Medicine, an educational resource on Thai medicine and charitable organization * Ph.D. candidate in the History of Medicine Department at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, focusing on East Asian medicine Affiliations Member of the International Association for the Study of Traditional Asian Medicine, the Association of Asian Studies, and the American Association for the History of Medicine. Also a member of several professional bodies in the alternative health industry, including the Association of Traditional Northern Thai Medicine (Thailand), the American Herbalists Guild, the Associated Bodywork and Massage Professionals, and the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork.
