Poor social conditions have a significant impact on disadvantaged groups, causing ill health, disability and early mortality. The major focus of this book is to demonstrate that scientific methods can be used: to analyze the nature of the problem of social deprivation in health care; to present the problem in a way that allows policy conclusions to be drawn; and to provide a basis for action to formulate a system of allocating resources for health care provision. The authors regard this as of particular importance at a time when the role and funding of GP services are being reassessed to reflect the increasing demands made on primary care.
