Since the 1990s there has been growing emphasis on reducing obstetric intervention, supporting women's choices in childbirth and promoting normality. An increase in home birth and midwifery-led birth centres reflect this trend. Currently, there is little guidance for midwives managing childbirth emergencies outside the hospital and without immediate medical assistance. This timely book addresses the deficit and provides both clinical and professional guidance for midwifery practice. It will be a valuable resource for midwifery students, qualified midwives, supervisors of midwives and paramedics.

VIVIEN WOODWARD is Senior Midwifery Lecturer at Homerton College, Cambridge School of Health Studies, UK, and has worked as a midwife since the 1970's. This included practice as a community midwife attached to GP unit in Suffolk. KAREN BATES is Midwifery Lecturer and Course Director for Midwifery Post-Registration Studies, at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of East Anglia, UK. She has a particular interest in the midwifery management of emergencies during childbirth and undertakes expert witness work in all areas of midwifery practice. NICKI YOUNG is a Lecturer in Midwifery at the University of East Anglia, UK. Her research interests include clinical decision-making in midwifery and the midwifery care received by women who undergo termination of pregnancy for foetal abnormality.
