HIPAA for Medical Office Personnel will provide information to learners on how the HIPAA ruling of 1996 affects their behavior when on the job. The book provides a brief background on the ruling; outlines the five titles included in the ruling, and delineates items from Title II that affect the medical office environment and what changes are necessary to be in compliance with this ruling.

Carole H. Krager is an adjunct instructor in the Medical Office Careers Department at Olney Central College campus of Illinois Eastern Community College, teaching medical insurance and coding and advanced coding. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois; is experienced in clinic billing; trained in diagnosis coding at Triton College in River Grove, Illinois and online AHIMA coding courses; has experience in outpatient hospital coding as a full-time coder for Hospital Sisters Health Systems in OFallon, Illinois; is a member of the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA); and is a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS). Carole has been an educator for more than 36 years and has successfully communicated in an easy-to-understand manner. She has been trained in teaching students who learn outside the norm. Experience with billing and coding enabled her to understand the inner workings of both physician and hospital offices. Dan Krager is formerly Manager of Information Systems, HIPAA Officer, and HIPAA Security Officer for Richland Memorial Hospital. Dan earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois. He is a certified network engineer with Novell Systems, Cisco systems, and Linux, with over 15 years of experience in computer and network applications for hospital settings. As HIPAA officer and HIPAA security officer, Dan enabled Richland Memorial Hospital to move toward compliance. He worked closely with Illinois Hospital Association to build a statewide infrastructure that enables health care organizations to interconnect electronically. As that infrastructure has matured, it has changed the way health care information is exchanged. Working with his wife Carole, Dan has authored two successful books about HIPAA and hopes this new edition will be as useful as the previous. Though Dan is now officially retired to his wood shop, he always keeps an eye open for changes in health care law.
