This book reviews the physiological control of haemostasis with special reference to the roles of thrombomodulin and thrombin which both have powerful clotting activities. Recent developments have emphasized that vascular endothelial cells regulate a range of biological systems by interacting with humoral glycoproteins and with other cell types. The book explores the modern concept that cell-surface reactions induce the localized production of thrombin, the principle enzyme of the coagulation cascade, which subsequently modulates a number of apparently diverse natural responses.
