As the subspecialty of community paediatrics develops, an up-to-date account of developmental paediatrics is increasingly required. This text is both a practical and a scientific account of the subject, covering all aspects, but without becoming too involved in the political issues. It is compatible with the joint working party on Child Health Surveillance currently being drawn up, which is expected to put pressure on GPs responsible for developmental testing. It aims to provide an account of the theory and practical assessment involved in the management of children's development as required by GPs and community paediatricians in training.
