This book sets out to provide a review of policy on palliative care. It focuses not only on past and current policy, but also explores a number of major issues that recur in literature on this subject. The issues covered include: the legal and ethical debates around palliative care; the major national and international lobby groups; international trends in policy development; and the potential for research, education, future debate and policy development. This book is not intended to be an exhaustive review of the literature but it does provide a representative overview of the key issues and arguments and an analysis of the past, present and future research, education and policy directions. The book also offers a useful and comprehensive critique of the UK NICE guidelines. These have been published for approximately one year now and form the cornerstone of future policy and service development. This is one of the first substantive books to offer an academic and carefully researched viewpoint on its potential. This book is aimed at people working within a broad spectrum of disciplines but primarily those working in palliative care.
It will also be useful to those studying a range of formal university modules and pathways in palliative care.

Mary Chiarella is Professor of Clinical Practice Development and Policy Research at the Centre for Health Services Management, Facutly of Nursing, Midwifery and Health, University of Technology, Sydney, Australia.
