Current treatment of this common crippling disease depends primarily on non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) which are more effective and better tolerated than simple analgesics. There is considerable concern however regarding long term therapy and development of symptoms such as charcot-like joints on some patients which contradict impressive symptomatic improvement in others. Clinicians need to know why and understand more of the underlying processes, both clinical and biochemical aspects. This book presents a collection of well illustrated anatomical and biochemical studies to show where future progress may be made. NSAIDS are shown, using animal models, to have significant effects on many processes protective or destructive, involved in cartilage degeneration. Intervention of these processes leads to progressive studies including pathogenesis in animal models, the role of anti- inflammatory drugs in bone destruction and pharmacological control. Lastly, the value of methods available for assessing changes or benefits of such intervention is considered.
