To provide comprehensive and up-to-date guidelines, the Standards Committee of the American Association of Blood Banks spent over a year reviewing data and the needs and experiences of American Association of Blood Banks' individuals (physicians, medical technologists, specialists in blood banking, nurses, scientists and administrators) and institutional (blood centres, blood banks and hospital transfusion services) members. Among the many revised policies and procedures, the largest number of comments in AABB history addresses the published draft of B1.272, which proposed permanent deferral of individuals whose history included two or more episodes of sexually transmitted disease. This new edition provides an updated standard for this area as well as more than 90 other changes or additions since the 13th edition.
