Soft Tissue Pain Syndromes: Clinical Diagnosis and Pathogenesis is a collection of the finest presentations from the 2004 International MYOPAIN Society’s Sixth World Congress held in Munich, Germany. Internationally respected experts present the state-of-the-art in pain mechanisms, myofascial pain syndrome, fibromyalgia syndrome, and inflammatory myopathies. Up-to-date innovative studies illustrate appropriate diagnosis approaches and latest practical treatments for soft tissue pain syndromes of all types.
To remain effective, physicians and other health care professionals treating soft tissue pain must strive to stay current on the latest research and cutting-edge therapies. Soft Tissue Pain Syndromes explores the latest advances in clinical evaluation, investigation, and principles of management of soft tissue pain in tendons, ligaments, bursa, fascia, muscles and nerves. The book is extensively referenced and contains several figures, tables, and graphs to enhance understanding.
Topics in Soft Tissue Pain Syndromes include:
new developments in the understanding of myofascial trigger points (TrPs)
medical and structural conditions associated with TrPs
the causes of orofacial pain
treatment to inactivate TrPs
effective therapies for myofascial pain
the latest developments in the understanding of fibromyalgia syndrome
diagnostic criteria and differential diagnosis of fibromyalgia
innovative nonpharmacologic therapies for fibromyalgia
the metabolism of muscle cells and metabolic myopathies
studies on therapies for idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIM)
low back painwith the latest therapies
reactions in the spinal cord to a painful lesion of a muscle
the latest findings in the morphopathogenetic background of muscle pain

Dieter E. Pongratz, MD, is Professor of Neurology and Internal Medicine at the University of Munich's Friedrch-Baur-Institute. Dr. Pongratz is an educator, clinical investigator, and physician. His research has focused on clinical aspects and myopathological findings in patients with neuromuscular diseases. He has authored around 300 original papers and edited books on clinical neurology, muscle disease, and differential diagnosis in internal medicine. Dr. Pongratz is a member of several professional societies and is currently President of the International MYOPAIN Society. Siegfried Mense, MD, is Professor of Anatomy and Cell Biology at Heidelberg University. Dr. Mense has studied neuroanatomy and neurophysiology of muscle pain in experiments for more than thirty years. His research interests are in the mechanisms of the transition from acute to chronic muscle pain. His published works include several journals and a book on basic and clinical aspects of muscle pain (with David G. Simons and I. Jon Russell). Dr. Mense has been a member of the council of the German chapter of the IASP for more than ten years and is currently Chairman of the German Pain Foundation. Michael Spaeth, MD, is an internist and rheumatologist. Since 1992, Dr. Spaeth has been a physician and clinical investigator at the University of Munich's Friedrich-Baur-Institute. His research interests have focused on Sjogren's Syndrome, immunogenic myopathies, and fibromyalgia syndrome. His published works include several original articles and book chapters. He has been the main investigator of many clinical trials in fibromyalgia and has cared for patients with all types of muscle pain. In 2003, Dr. Spaeth became the senior physician for the rheumatology at the Friedrich-Baur-Institute.
