Focuses on 20 fundamental core skills required of the Speech-language pathologist Designed in a workshop format - ideal for student courses and continuing education for practitioners Includes free DVD with visual presentations and demonstrations of skills Unique in its design and content, this book-DVD combination helps students and practitioners enhance their clinical skills by working through guided practice of skills and concepts on topics such as developing the therapeutic mindset, appropriate proximity, and stimulus presentation. The use of task-analysis for development of specific underlying therapeutic skills makes provision of therapy logical and manageable. The author focuses on the fundamental activities that occur within the speech-language therapy session and on the specific core skills of the therapeutic process.
She provides definitions of numerous research-based terms related to underlying skills within the speech-language therapy session and offers guided practice and demonstrations of approximately 20 fundamental therapeutic skills in the form of systematic "workshops" that include both scripted and DVD demonstrations of skills using advance organizers, definitions/demonstrations, think-out-loud questions, prompts for practice, and post organizers for each therapy skill addressed. A 50-minute DVD accompanies the text and adds significantly to the tutorial aspects of the book by presenting visual demonstrations of skills. One- to three-minute vignettes give students real-life examples of how nine specific therapeutic skills may be implemented. Then, in two 15-minute sessions of therapy, students view implementation of basic articulation and basic language therapy from introduction to closing, demonstrations. Both are invaluable to both beginning and practicing SLPs. This unique digital resource gives readers an opportunity to study at length, as often as needed, the specific underlying skills needed to provide effective therapy.
Here's How to Do Therapy is an ideal text plus DVD for clinical practicum experiences or clinical management courses, as well as an individual guidebook for clinicians engaged in SLP intervention.
Debra Dwight, Ed.D Debra Dwight is an Alabama native and received a bachelor's degree in Speech Therapy and a master's degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of South Alabama, Mobile. Her master's and doctoral degrees in Speech-Language Pathology were received from the University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, where Debra developed an interest in clinical teaching. Although she worked as a college/ university faculty member in different positions over the past ten years, Debra describes herself as a clinical practitioner due to her constant desire to impact the quality of service delivery in the speech-language profession. She has worked as a speech-language pathologist in public schools, as a university clinical supervisor, as director of a pre-K special needs program, and as a college instructor, and assistant professor. She currently serves as Director of Speech-Language Pathology Programs at University of West Georgia, Carrollton. Her desire to improve the quality of services provided by speech-language professionals led Dr. Dwight to develop a practical method for teaching basic, hands-on, core skills to university students majoring in Speech-Language Pathology. Drawing from three decades of combined academic, clinical, and supervisory experiences, she developed the text, Here's How to do Therapy: Hands-On Core Skills in Speech-Language Pathology, a practical guide for all Speech-Language Pathology professionals.
