This edited book covers basics of thin membrane endothelial keratoplasty which essentially includes DMEK and PDEK.
This is the second edition of a well-received book - Mastering Endothelial Keratoplasty: DSAEK, DMEK, E-DMEK, PDEK, Air pump-assisted PDEK and others, Volume I and II.
This edited book covers basics of thin membrane endothelial keratoplasty which essentially includes DMEK and PDEK. It covers various surgical techniques currently in use, including among others, the endoilluminator assisted technique, air pump assisted technique, host Descemetic scaffolding, etc. It also includes pre-operative work-up as well as post-operative graft management, combined surgeries, management of complicated situations, prevention and handling of complications, role of Descemet’s stripping, and RHO-assisted kinase (Rock) inhibitors. The book includes videos showing surgical techniques as practiced by leading international experts from advanced centers.
Endothelial keratoplasty is a field of great interest to all corneal surgeons and is replacing penetrating keratoplastyas the procedure of choice in most indications of endothelial failure, unless associated with central scarring. Thin membrane endothelial keratoplasties are at an exciting and evolving stage as newer techniques of DMEK and PDEK have inherent advantages that make them supersede not only penetrating keratoplasty but also DSAEK. Hence, in today's scenario it is of great interest among corneal surgeons who wish to learn and master these techniques as well as be able to manage complicated situations and complications.
This book is a must-read for the beginner as well as the established surgeons. It is also a must-have for educational institutions, hospital- based libraries and for post-graduate students, fellows and residents who want to expand their knowledge.
Dr. Soosan Jacob, Director and Chief, Dr. Agarwal's Refractive and Cornea Foundation and Senior Consultant, Cataract and Glaucoma Services at Dr. Agarwal’s Eye Hospital, Chennai, India is a noted surgeon, academician and a well-respected innovator. She is chair of multimedia editorial board ISRS, Secretary ISRS, Chair- cornea committee GERSO, associate editor JRS, section editor EyeNet (AAO) and editorial board member of many peer reviewed journals. She has been featured as one among five of the most influential female figures in ophthalmology at a virtual roundtable and listed multiple times among the Top 100 most influential people in ophthalmology and as a key opinion leader. She is also listed consecutively in Stanford's 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 lists of top 2 percentile scientists from around the world (published by Elsevier). She is a two-time winner of the ASCRS Golden Apple award, ASCRS Top-Gun Instructor award, John Henahan award, JRS Waring medal, Innovator’s award from Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians and numerous other international awards and named orations. Her innovations include Corneal Allogenic Intrastromal Ring Segments (CAIRS) for keratoconus; Contact lens Assisted CXL (CACXL) for thin corneas; PrEsbyopic Allogenic Refractive Lenticule (PEARL) inlay for presbyopia; Glued capsular hook for subluxated cataracts; Stab Incision Glaucoma Surgery (SIGS), Air-pump assisted Pre-Descemet's Endothelial Keratoplasty and Endo-illuminator assisted Descemet's Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (E-DMEK); host Descemetic scaffolding; classification of Descemet’s detachments into rhegmatogenous, tractional, bullous and complex with treatment algorithm, Relaxing Descemetotomy; Turnaround technique for Intacs; Glued Endo-Capsular Ring, Anterior segment transplantation, supra-brow single stab incision ptosis surgery, sequential segmental terminal lenticular side cut dissection and white ring sign for SMILE, SMILE lenticule assisted dermoid excision and others.
