There are approximately 10,000 PA students per year in the US and approximately 60,000 practising PAs. The US Bureau of Labour Statistics projects that the number of PA jobs will increase by 53% between 2000 and 2010. In addition, the PA profession is ranked in the top 15 fastest growing occupations in the US. All states require physician assistants to pass the Physician Assistants National Certifying Examination (PANCE), administered by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Only those who have successfully completed the exam may use the credential "Physician Assistant-Certified" (PA-C). In order to remain certified, every 6 years PAs must pass the Physician Assistants National Recertification Examination (PANRE) which covers many of the same topics as the original exam. Despite a growing market, there is very little available as far as review material for the PANCE and PANRE. The books that are currently available (including the book that is endorsed by the AAPA) are lacking in two significant ways. The questions are not board format and none of the questions are case based. This book will differ in that it will take a case based approach.
Cases are provided with 3-7 questions based on each case. At the end of each section, answers will be provided with explanations for each right and wrong answer. The questions will be designed to evaluate the student's performance as it relates to the proper history taking skills, physical examination skills, diagnostic skills, diagnostic testing interpretation skills, and therapeutic management skills. The material covered will be consistent with the NCCPA published Organ System List which is the framework for the PANCE and PANRE. A supplemental CD-ROM, that provides a simulated exam for self-testing will be packaged with the book.
The following contents of the book follow the NCCPA content list that is provided to all applicants of the PANCE and PANRE. I.
