This work assesses the significance of anaemia in malignant disease and examines the application of modern molecular biology in cancer therapy. It presents the proceedings of an international workshop, summarizing the development and clinical trials of erythropoietin, and demonstrating its efficacy in maintaining haemoglobin levels or prevanting anaemia due to erythropoietin deficiency. The use of blood transfusion in cancer treatment, and the problems facing blood transfusion services since increased awareness of HIV, are discussed.
The significance of anaemia in cancer patients: progress in understanding haematopoiesis; pathophysiology of cancer-related anaemia; the incidence and clinical significance of anaemia in malignant diseases; the cost-effectiveness of rhEPO use in anaemia of cancer; problems of blood transfusion specific to cancer patients: problems of providing a national blood-transfusion service; the effect of blood donation on prognosis and infectious complications after colorectal cancer surgery; the effects of allogenic and autologous blood transfusions on the prognosis of cancer patients; clinical efficacy and safety of rhErythropoietin in cancer patients: rhEPO treatment for the anaemia of multiple myelo-ma and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma; controlled mul-ticentre study on the influence of two different Dos-ages of subcutaneous rhEPO on the development of anaemia and transfusion dependency in patients with ovarian carcinoma treated with platinum-based combination chemotherapy; rhEPO in the treatment of anaemia associated with malignancy; the use of rhEPO for the prevention and treatment of cytostatics-induced anaemia in children; predictors of response to rhEPO in non-renal anaemia; experimental data concerning the safety profile of rhEPO in the treatment of cancer patients; a meta-analysis on the safety of epoietin-B therapy in cancer patients; potential use of rhErythropoietin in haematopoietic stem-cell disorders: rhEPO in the treatment of the myelo-dysplastic syndromes; rhEPO in combination with other growth factors in haematological malignancies; tudor oxygenation in cancer therapy: tudor oxygenation - characterization and clinical implications; tudor oxygenation - is it important? can it be improved?
