Fully revised and updated, this second edition is a comprehensive introduction to molecular communication including the theory, applications, and latest developments. With seven new chapters, this remains a definitive guide to the subject for graduate students and researchers in electrical engineering, computer science, and molecular biology.
Fully revised and updated, this second edition is a comprehensive introduction to molecular communication including the theory, applications, and latest developments. Written with accessibility in mind, it requires little background knowledge, and carefully introduces the relevant aspects of biology and information theory, as well as practical systems. Capturing the significant changes and developments in the past decade, this edition includes seven new chapters covering: the architecture of molecular communication; modelling of biological molecular communication; mobile molecular communication; macroscale systems; design of components and bio-nanomachine formations. The authors present the biological foundations followed by analyses of biological systems in terms of communication theory, and go on to discuss the practical aspects of designing molecular communication systems such as drug delivery, lab-on-a-chip, and tissue engineering. Including case studies and experimental techniques, this remains a definitive guide to molecular communication for graduate students and researchers in electrical engineering, computer science, and molecular biology.

Tadashi Nakano is a Professor in the Graduate School of Informatics, Osaka Metropolitan University, Japan. He conducts research at the intersection of computer science and biology, including design, implementation, and evaluation of molecular communication systems, synthetic biological systems, and biologically inspired systems. His research received the KDDI Foundation Award 2021. Andrew Eckford is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at York University, Canada. His research has appeared in media including The Economist and IEEE Spectrum. His research received the 2015 IET Communications Innovation Award, and was a finalist for the 2014 Bell Labs Prize. Tokuko Haraguchi is a Professor with the Graduate School of Science and Frontier Biosciences at Osaka University, Japan. Her research has appeared in media including Researchmap and Pubmed. Her research received the 5th Kono Yasui Prize- an Ochanomizu University Award. She is an Editorial Board member of Cell Structure and Function.
