Polycystic ovarian disease (PCOD) is a badly defined disease syndrome in which women usually have oligomenorrhoea and elevated plasma luteinizing hormone (LH) concentrations. The contributors to this book deal with the epidemiology of polycystic ovaries, their structure and function in the ovary and a range of treatments and their effects. Amongst these are insulin resistance and obesity, the effect on bone mass in polycystic ovarian syndrome, pregnancy loss and menstrual disorders, the effects of long-term administration of GnRH analogues, the effect of the combined use of GnRH analogues and pulsatile GnRH for ovulation induction, gonadotropin therapy response and assisted reproduction programmes.
