Introduction to the manual
Welcome to the first edition of Foundations of Anatomy and Physiology: A Workshop Manual with Laboratory Applications, an all-inclusive resource for health science and nursing students. This workshop manual is designed to provide students with the conceptual foundations of basic science, anatomy, and physiology, as well as the critical thinking skills they will need to apply theory to practice in real-life settings, irrespective of the facilities available. It caters to nursing, health science, and allied health students at varying levels of understanding and ability.
This manual was developed as a result of difficulties experienced in sourcing and accessing relevant learning activities for use across a number of learning applications (pre-, in-, post-class) and environments (online, classroom, standard laboratory) in the teaching of health science units. In this process, relevant instruction materials are often selected from a variety of sources and collated into study modules for their collective value, which is time-consuming, presents inconsistencies in language and content, and needs to be undertaken for individual units within a course. In addition, manuals accompanying textbooks are specific to the textbook and become redundant when another textbook is adopted, or where institutional facilities, instructor budgets, and study modes make some activities difficult to conduct.
Progression within a unit of study or through a course often relies on understanding key foundational concepts, which can then be scaffolded to introduce more complex concepts. By focusing on understanding foundational concepts, conceptual progression becomes easier for the instructor and student. This manual is a concept-based resource that facilitates this process. Learning activities are scaffolded to enable students to progress to more complex concepts once they have mastered the basics.

Features of the manual
Introductions
Each chapter commences with a main introduction to provide an overview and scope of the chapter content. The introduction also provides links to other chapters where relevant or to where linked content can be located. Each activity is also accompanied by a separate introduction outlining the conceptual relevance of the activity.
Learning outcomes
Numbered learning outcomes at the beginning of each chapter provide an outline of the objectives achieved by the activities in the chapter. Activities are also accompanied by individual objectives which provide conceptual scope.
Key terms
Key terms are provided at the beginning of each chapter and provide an overview of the concepts addressed by the activities within the chapter. Key terms are also provided in bold within activity introductions so that conceptual links can be made between the key terms and activity objectives.
Numbered activities
Activities are numbered according to chapter and number for activities located within the manual, and chapter and letter for activities located on Evolve® (for example, Activity 6.2 and Activity 6D respectively).
Additional activities
Additional activities have been provided to extend learning application, and are indicated within chapters by text boxes. These activities are numbered according to chapter and letter order to facilitate navigation (for example, Activity 6B). Additional activities can be accessed through Evolve®.
Activity icons
Each activity is accompanied by an icon which indicates the learning application and resources required. Some activities are accompanied by more than one icon to indicate that multiple concepts are covered within the activity.
Indicates an activity that can be conducted at home or within a classroom environment, with few or no resources required. It is associated with activities requiring research, bookwork, and diagram interpretation. |
Indicates an activity that can be conducted within a classroom environment with some additional resources required, but does not require a standard laboratory environment. It is associated with activities indicating physical application of concepts. |
Indicates an activity that can be conducted within a classroom or traditional laboratory environment, but requires access to a microscope. It is associated with activities involving microscopy and requiring associated resources. |
Indicates an activity that should be conducted within a standard laboratory environment, with additional resources required. It signals activities that should not be conducted within a classroom setting or at home. |
Associated with Apply the Concepts boxes. These boxed features provide questions and scenarios associated with applications of the activity or chapter concepts and usually require further research. |
Indicates potential warnings or risks associated with an activity. Please check the risk management and safety requirements of your institution prior to conducting these activities. |
Indicates an additional activity that is provided online and can be accessed through Evolve®. Evolve® activities are also accompanied by the icons shown above. |
Figures
Questions and activities are accompanied by full-colour figures to provide clarity, create a user-friendly manual, and enhance the learning experience
Answer lines
Each question is accompanied by answer lines so that students can interact directly with the content in the manual. This also allows for activities to be used as pre-class, in-class and post-class activities or submitted as assessment items.
Additional resources
A list of additional resources is located at the end of each chapter to provide access to further content for students to explore and interact with online. These can be used to supplement activities in the manual during class, form pre-class preparation or post-class follow-up, or to facilitate online learning.
Spiral binding
The manual is provided as a spiral bound book for ease of use, allowing students to use it directly within the classroom or lab setting.
Page perforations
Pages are perforated near the spiral binding so that they can be removed with ease. This allows for activities to be removed and submitted as assessed items or to be included as part of an external portfolio.
eBook on VitalSource
The manual is provided as an eBook on VitalSource to support varied modes of teaching and learning, and to allow for electronic submission. The eBook also supports technology-enabled learning, where personal devices or computer laboratory facilities form part of the learning environment, as well as in technology-enabled wet laboratories with inbuilt student tablets.
