This volume reviews the current biological, environmental and socio-economic factors that lead to changes in the patterns of infectious diseases. It also discusses ways of managing outbreaks and the priority that should be given to new and resurgent infections in relation to health policies.
In the last decade, the world has seen the AIDS pandemic and a host of apparently "new" infectious diseases, such as ebola and CJD. The incidence of a number of familiar diseases (such as malaria and TB) is also increasing. This volume reviews the current biological, environmental and socio-economic factors that lead to changes in the patterns of infectious diseases. Describing the ways these changes can best be monitored, it also discusses ways of managing outbreaks, and the priority that should be given to new and resurgent infections in relation to health policies. New and resurgent infectious diseases pose an important threat to public health, as do infections caused by drug-resistant organisms.
