Steroid Hormone Receptors in Endocrine Physiology and Diseases covers the role of steroid hormones in human physiology and receptor activity in the pathophysiology of disease. The book discusses how these receptors can be used as therapeutic targets for the treatment of conditions from cancer to aging, offering immediate applications of biochemical principles into clinical applications such as diagnosis and treatment. This book is a valuable reference for graduate and postdoctoral scientists but is also ideal for medical students interested in the functional role of various steroid hormone receptors in a wide variety of endocrine related diseases.Steroid hormone receptors (SHRs) are known to play vital roles in normal physiology through the control of development, differentiation, metabolic homeostasis and reproduction. Due to their involvement in various pathological and disease conditions, SHRs are also important therapeutic targets in several disorders including inflammation, autoimmune diseases, hormone-dependent cancers, osteoporosis and cardiovascular diseases.

Raj Kumar, Ph.D., is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences at the Touro College of Pharmacy, Touro University, New York, NY, . For more than 20-years, Dr. Kumar has been actively pursuing structure-based drug designing for endocrine related diseases. Dr. Kumar has co-authored about 100 publications, including research articles, invited reviews/book chapters, books and a patent. Current research projects in Dr Kumar’s group are multidisciplinary and focus on the structural and functional aspects of the steroid hormone receptors. Dr. Kumar’s publications are highly cited, and has received several research grant funding including National Institutes of Health (NIH) RO1 grants. Dr. Kumar has spoken at several events as invited speaker, served as an editorial board member for scientific journals, served on various grant review panels, including NIH and the National Science Foundation (NSF).. Iain McEwan, Ph.D., is a Professor of Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology and has over 25 years research experience in steroid receptor signaling and managing a productive research group, with over 77 peer reviewed publications. Current research projects in Dr McEwan’s group are multidisciplinary and focus on fundamental and translational aspects of androgen receptor expression, structure, and function. Research funding sources include the Medical Research Council (UK), Prostate Cancer Research (UK) and local charities. Dr. McEwan sits on a several grant awarding committees for Prostate Cancer UK and is co-chair of the Translational Clinical Sciences panel, Chief Scientist Office (Scottish Government). . He has edited or co-edited several books on the nuclear receptor superfamily and co-authored a book of ‘Testosterone: From Basic Research to Clinical Applications’.
