The treatment and prevention of muscle damage makes many demands on the time and attention of practioners of sports, occupational and clinical medicine. Despite this, surprisingly little is known about the mechanisms responsible for such damage. This book provides a comprehensive statement of what is currently known about muscle damage and what is yet to be learnt, in terms of both the underlying science and strategies for clinical management. Each chapter gives an account of up-to-date knowledge on a relevant topic. Based upon an issue of the "Journal of Basic and Applied Myology", the text has been rewritten, restructured and expanded, so that the content is completely up-to-date.
Muscle damage induced by exercise - nature, prevention and repair; muscle damage induced by contraction - an in situ single skeletal muscle model; muscle damage induced by cyclic eccentric contraction - biomechanical and structural studies; human muscle damage induced by eccentric exercise or reperfusion injury - a common mechanism?; muscle damage induced by neuromuscular stimulation; intracellular mechanisms involved in skeletal muscle damage; molecular markers of muscle polasticity, damage regeneration and repair; radioisotopic uptake as a tool for investigating experimentally induced muscle damage; muscle damage due to strain injury - biomechanical and structural studies; muscle damage in myopathies; damage in functional grafts of skeletal muscle.
