This book is the first single author/institution textbook covering the complete spectrum of the surgical management of congenital heart disease. It shows how an operation should be done; incorporates an evidence-based approach and explains when and why an operation should be done as well as the risks, benefits and potential complications.
The management of congenital heart disease has changed dramatically over the last 15 years and continues to evolve at a rapid pace. More than ever before contemporary practice requires a collaborative effort by a large healthcare team comprised not only of congenital cardiac surgeons but also pediatric cardiac nurses, pediatric cardiologists, perfusion and respiratory technicians, pediatric cardiac intensivists, pediatric cardiac anesthesiologists, ultrasonographers, and MRI and catheter laboratory technicians. All of these individuals need to have a clear understanding of the morphology and pathophysiology of congenital heart disease as well as the surgical manipulations that take place in the operating room.

This textbook describes in detail the current practice in congenital heart surgery of Richard A Jonas and the team from Harvard Medical School in Boston with whom he worked closely for many years. The book includes numerous beautiful illustrations providing comprehensive and detailed information about intra-operative management of the entire spectrum of congenital heart surgery. However, this is much more than an operative atlas that illustrates how an operation should be done; it also incorporates an evidence-based approach, supported throughout by numerous scientific citations, to explain when and why an operation should be done as well as the risks, benefits and potential complications.

Richard A Jonas MD was named the William E Ladd Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School in 1994. In 2004 he became Co-director of the Children's National Heart Institute in Washington DC.
