The book examines how molecular processes generate specific tissue and organ forms in order to highlight possible common (and unique) mechanisms. Several organisms are represented, each exploiting a developmental paradigm relevant to a specific organ system. Emphasis is placed on molecules that influence cell behaviour, including extracellular matrix components, signalling peptides, degradative enzymes and their inhibitors, cell adhesion molecules and cell junction-associated molecules, and various intracellular organelles, including the actin-containing cytoskeleton, intermediate filaments and microtubules.
