Describes new methods of diagnosis and treatment that relate to women during the years of declining reproductive capacity. It presents the effects of ageing, lists major clinical problems, details the endocrinology of the postmenopausal period, and details the hormonal medications available.
This revised edition describes new methods of diagnosis and treatment that directly relate to women during the years of declining reproductive capacity. The book is divided into four main sections. It first looks at the basic elements of the effects of ageing and the changes from reproductive loss are presented and described historically, along with some of Dr Eskin's added personal interpretations. The work then lists the major clinical problems that may occur during menopause, including osteoporosis, urinary tract atrophism, non-endocrine gynaecologic diseases and the sexuality of the climacteric woman. The next section details the overall endocrinology of the postmenopausal period, with reference to the parallel clinical problems presented in Section 2. The final section deals with the hormonal medications available and how they may be used preventatively and therapeutically. A description of the latest therapies and delivery systems with phramacological mechanisms is presented, as are the risk factors, particularly oestrogen and cancer. Each section is developed by several detailed chapters related to the main issue.
