Our natural tapestry, the skin, can be torn apart by disease, and we can suffer from horrendous physical and emotional trauma. This book gathers together a number of stories of people with skin diseases, and its organizing principle is each patient’s story and the search for the fundamental humanity, compassion, and empathy for the person with skin and systemic issues. One central element of the book is the need to dignify a person’s life in the face of disease—something that is often not their fault.

Dr Robert A. Norman is a board-certified dermatologist and family physician who has been in practice for over 30 years. He is a faculty member and clinical instructor for several medical, physician assistant, and nursing schools, and has been honored with numerous service and teaching awards. He also has both MPH and MBA degrees and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. Dr Norman has written and edited 52 books, including The Blue Man and Other Stories of the Skin and Discover Magazine’s Vital Signs—True Tales of Medical Mysteries, Obscure Diseases, and Life-Saving Diagnoses, and published over 250 articles. He has a private practice and is the Chief Physician and owner of Dermatology Healthcare, which delivers essential skin care services for nursing home patients. He is a frequent medical volunteer and has participated in multiple medical mission trips to serve the poor of southern Jamaica, Haiti, and Guatemala.
