This book is about the history, science, technology and current clinical applications of electrical stimulation for the relief of pain. The clinical applications are diverse, from angina and the pain of peripheral vascular disease to the agony of interstitial cystitis (a promising new indication), from the mysterious and disabling complex regional pain syndromes to phantom pain and stroke pain. The contributors reflect the multidisciplinary nature of the subject in a unique compilation. All parts of the nervous system can be stimulated to provide relief of otherwise intractable pain, from the peripheral nerves through the spinal cord to the brain, and the book is organised on this basis.
The history of electrical stimulation of the nervous system for the control of pain, U. Rossi; principles of neurostimulation, J. Holsheimer; transcutaneous and peripheral nerve stimulation, M. Stanton-Hicks; sacral nerve root stimulation for interstitial cystitis, D.S. Bennett, D. Brookoff; spinal cord stimulation for back pain, G. Barolat, A. Sharan, J. Ong; spinal cord stimulation for neuropathic pain, J.C. Oakley; spinal cord stimulation for complex regional pain syndromes, D.S. Bennett, T.L. Cameron; spinal cord stimulation in peripheral vascular disease, G.H. Spincemaille; neuromodulation for refractory angina pectoris, T. Eliasson, M.J.L. DeJongste, C. Mannheimer; spinal cord stimulation - mechanisms of action in neuropathic and ischemic pain, B.A. Meyerson, B. Linderoth; spinal cord and peripheral nerve stimulation: technical aspects, R.B. North; motor cortex stimulation, J.-P. Nguyen, J.P. Lefaucheur, Y. Keravel; deep brain stimulation, V.M. Tronnier; selection of patients and assessment of outcome, B.A. Simpson; the future of spinal cord stimulation and related "neuroaugmentative" procedures, E. Buchser, S. Thomson.
