Relevant for children and adults at all stages of communication development, this work should be of use to rehabilitation professionals who work with AAC users. It covers linguistic competence, operational competence, social competence, and strategic competence.
Relevant for children and adults at all stages of communication development, this work should be useful for speech therapists, educators, and rehabilitation professionals who work with Augmentative and Alternative Communication users. It presents research and theory and guides readers through four skill areas important to the development of communicative competence. The skill areas consist of linguistic competence, operational competence, social competence, and strategic competence. Linguistic competence teaches about issues such as the impact of AAC on an individual's natural speech production, the development and use of picture-based communication systems, and the relationship between spoken language and the "language" of AAC systems. Operational competence considers issues related to technical operation of AAC systems, and social competence explores factors such as the effect of developmental disabilities on social communication. Strategic competence examines operational, linguistic, and social constraints faced by AAC users.

Part I Definition of communicative competence: "shattering the silence" - the development of communicative competence by individuals who require augmentative and alternative communication, Janice Light. Part II Linguistic competence: AAC and natural speech in individuals with developmental disabilities, Katherine C. Hustad and Kathy L. Shapely; towards linguistic competence - the language experiences and knowledge of children with extremely limited speech, Susan Blockberger and Ann Sutton; representational competence, Beth Mineo Mollica; augmented input - enhancing communication development, MaryAnn Romski and Rose A. Sevcik; asymmetry in input and output for individuals who use augmentative and alternative communication, Martine Smith and Nicola Grove. Part III Operational competence: supporting competent motor control of AAC systems, Jutta Treviranus and Vera Roberts; cognitive skills and AAC - where we've been, what we know, and the questions we should ask, Charity Rowland and Philip Schweigert.
