Though physicians do not perform many laboratory tests, they still need to know about the testing and be able to interact with laboratory personnel. This book provides lab information for the obstetrics and gynaecological team and clinical information for the lab personnel.
There have been many books devoted to gynaeologic pathology but most have concentrated on anatomic pathology. The goal of this text is to provide a clinical pathology view for obstetrics and gynaecology. Continuing medical progress has taken the clinician away from the time where practically all physicians were comfortable with urinalysis, gram staining, etc. Though the physician does not actually perform many of the tests, it is still necessary for him/her to know about the testing and be able to interact with laboratory personnel in the hospital. This book will provide lab information to the obstetrics and gynaecological team and clinical information to the lab personnel, ultimately leading to better patient care.

The book is divided into four sections - Clinical, Test, Methods, and Glossary. In the Clinical Section, different disease states of pregnancy-related problems are discussed, mainly in terms of laboratory diagnosis and follow-up. The focus is on those problems requiring multiple laboratory tests, serial testing, or requiring selective testing such as many endocrine evaluations. Individual tests are described in the Test Section. Included are: normal values, pathophysiology, its clinical usefulness in obstetrics and gynaecology, how to obtain the specimen, factors that alter the result, and management guidelines. The Methods Section describes the overall concept of the methodology, rather than provide all the steps in the process. Finally, the Glossary Section includes terminology to address the experienced clinician, as well as those in training
