This monograph, based on longitudinal study by the Kasongo Project Team, constitutes the findings of a longitudinal study of 6228 children in a sub-Saharan community in Zaire over a period of more than 18 months. The author considers mortality during the survey, levels and causes. Measles accounted for a considerable proportion of deaths, particulary in the 12- to 17-month age group. The chapter on reported illness emphasizes not only measles but respiratory illness. Chapters describe the patterns of growth in the population and the influence of disease on growth. Two final chapters consdier growth deficit and growth faltering as risk factors for mortality, and the measurement of nutritional status for screening purposes, ie the identification of children at risk of dying.
