This book introduces the basic concepts underlying the use of statistics in medical research, and is a practical guide to the initiation and analysis of a research project. It covers the majority of statistical methods commonly encountered in the medical literature and, in line with current thinking, particular emphasis is placed on the confidence interval approach. This edition expands on the material in the last edition, but the broad structure of the book remains the same. However, the chapters on computers and vital statistics have been totally reworked. Major changes have been made to the sections on confidence intervals.
Descriptive statistics - data presentation; descriptive statistics - summarizing data; probability, populations and samples; estimation - confidence intervals for means, proportions counts and rates; hypothesis testing - introduction to statistical tests of significance; hypothesis testing - general principles and one-sample tests for means, proportions, counts and rates; confidence intervals and hypothesis tests - two-group comparisons; comparisons of more than two groups - analysis of variance and the chi-square test; regression and correlation; medical studies and epidemiological statistics; the randomized controlled trial; multivariate analysis and the control of confounding; vital statistics; computers and medical research; bias and measurement error in medical research.
