This comprehensive account of current practice in psychiatry covers the classification, causes and prevention of psychiatric disorders. The edition has been updated to include advances in psychopharmacology (SSRIs, RIMAs and anti-psychotics) and to discuss the effects of present NHS reforms.
This new edition of the extremely successful book by Jennifer Hughes presents a comprehensive account of current practice in psychiatry. It covers classification, causes, and prevention of psychiatric disorders and gives practical information on history-taking, mental state examination, and investigation. Each of the major syndromes is discussed, as well as the psychiatry of special age groups and populations. The fourth edition, by Jennifer Barraclough (formerly Hughes) and David Gill, retains the format of previous editions, but has been brought up to date throughout. All chapters have been rewritten to reflect recent research findings, changes in classification and terminology, and new methods of NHS service delivery. Case histories have been added to illustrate the clinical relevance of the material. Although designed primarily for medical students and trainee and practising psychiatrists, the book will also be of value to readers in other specialities, who have no previous knowledge of the subject, and anyone with a general interest in psychiatry.
