This text reveals the differences between Western and Japanese culture in relation to the historical background of the hospice movement, attitudes to death and dying and doctor-patient relationships. It considers difficulties in bringing Western hospice concept to Japan. At the same time, the research examines the possibility of Japan taking some features of the hospice care for its people without contaminating their long tradition of communal sharing of death and emotional issues and lack of a strong awareness of the fear of death as an individual.
