The Golgi apparatus was discovered by Camillo Golgi in 1898, but the technique he used (which also found for him neuronal networks, and a Nobel Prize in 1906) was not easy to reproduce, and controversy about the existence of his apparato reticolare interno was not dispelled until the 1960s, when electron microscopy identified it as a ubiquitous organelle. This text describes the current state of knowledge about the Golgi apparatus, both in animals and plants, and is of relevance to glycobiologists, cell and molecular biologists and advanced students of biology.
