This textbook is intended primarily for students of medicine. The pathology of diseases and disease processes is presented in the context of modern medical practice and relevant advances in cellular and molecular biology. Part 1 (Basic Pathology) deals with the classification and causation of disease and the role of diagnostic pathology in clinical practice. Part 2 (Disease Mechanisms) details the pathological processes involved in the main categories of disease. Part 3 (Systematic Pathology) gives comprehensive accounts of specific diseases.

James Underwood is the Professor of Pathology at the University of Sheffield, UK, and a Consultant Histopathologist. For over 30 years, James has enjoyedthe challenge of teaching pathology to students of medicine, dentistry and related subjects, while diagnosing disease in the living and the dead and researching into its causes.

James graduated in medicine and started his career in pathology in London before going to Sheffield. During his early career he held a research fellowship from the Medical Research Council and in the early 1980s he had a sabbatical in Australia. His main interests arein breast cancer and chronic inflammatory liver disease. James is currently Vice-President of the Royal College of Pathologists, President of the BritishDivision of the International Academy of Pathology, and Editor of "Histopathology", a monthly journal. He was, of course, delighted to be declared a Winner at the Royal Society of Medicine's Book Awards 2000 for the third edition of "General and Systematic Pathology".

His main interest outside work is leisure! But he also enjoys strenuous walks with his family in wet, wild and windy places, and he has a passionate interest in music.
