This is the first book to cover all aspects of the development of imaging biomarkers and their integration into clinical practice, from the conceptual basis through to the technical aspects that need to be considered in order to ensure that medical imaging can serve as a powerful quantification instrument capable of providing valuable information on organ and tissue properties. The process of imaging biomarker development is considered step by step, covering proof of concept, proof of mechanism, image acquisition, image preparation, imaging biomarker analysis and measurement, detection of measurement biases (proof of principle), proof of efficacy and effectiveness, and reporting of results. Sources of uncertainty in the accuracy and precision of measurements and pearls and pitfalls in gold standards and biological correlation are discussed. In addition, practical use cases are included on imaging biomarker implementation in brain, oncologic, cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, and abdominal diseases. The authors are a multidisciplinary team of expert radiologists and engineers, and the book will be of value to all with an interest in the quantitative imaging of biomarkers in personalized medicine.

Luis Martí-Bonmatí, MD, PhD Luis Martí-Bonmatí is radiologist and Chairman of the Clinical Area of Medical Imaging at La Fe Polytechnics and University Hospital in Valencia, Spain. He has been a member of the Executive Council and has served as Director of the Research Committee of the European Society of Radiology (ESR) from 2010 to 2013, starting the Imaging Biomarkers Subcommittee. He is currently a member of the European Imaging Biomarkers Alliance (EIBALL) and of the Scientific Council of the European Institute of Biomedical Imaging Research (EIBIR). Martí-Bonmatí is author of a high number of publications focused on Magnetic Resonance, Clinical Radiology, the development of Imaging Biomarkers, and Engineering-supported Biomedical Research. He is currently Associate Editor of European Radiology and Radiology journals. Angel Alberich-Bayarri, PhD Angel Alberich-Bayarri is biomedical engineer and Scientific-Technical Director at the Biomedical Imaging Research Group (GIBI230) at La Fe Polytechnics University Hospital. He has worked in the development of several algorithms for Imaging Biomarkers analysis that promoted the creation of the start-up QUIBIM (Quantitative Imaging Biomarkers in Medicine), focused in the creation of a platform for the analysis of Imaging Biomarkers. He is member of the board of the European Society of Medical Imaging Informatics (EUSOMII) and of the e-Health and Informatics Subcommittee of the European Society of Radiology (ESR). Alberich-Bayarri is authors of several publications in the field of imaging biomarkers. He received the MIT Innovators Under 35 award in 2015.

"This book discusses all the aspects of establishing an imaging biomarker by systemically guiding the reader through the various steps of development. ... a book that will provide an excellent induction for novices in this field. For someone contemplating developing a new biomarker to measure a disease process of interest, or for industry employees entering the world of monitoring new treatments using biomarkers, this book will be an excellent reading and stimulate further thinking." (Professor Frederik Barkhof, RAD Magazine, December, 2017)
