Eye problems in general practice are extremely common, but the time devoted to ophthalmology at undergraduate level is very limited. As a result, GPs often prefer to refer patients to specialist units rather than attempt to manage even the simple conditions themselves. This situation is now changing as GPs try to limit their referrals as a consequence of the new GP contract.
