This book describes in detail a unique and very precise operative technique that uses autologous cartilage/bone grafts for the reconstruction of load-bearing joint surfaces and for dowelling of non-unions. The technique, employing diamond instruments and a wet grinding process, has been developed and refined over the past 30 years at the Center for Orthopaedic Sciences (ZOW), first in Bern and later in Munich. After completing their medical studies, Klaus and Yvette Draenert were responsible for establishing the research department for cartilage and bone morphology under the chairman of Professor Maurice Edmond Müller at the University of Berne, and this unit went on to become a leading institute for interface and biomaterial research. In 1978, their research group accepted an assignment from the Technical University in Munich to develop Germany's leading research department in orthopaedics. In 1991, Klaus Draenert received his inauguration from the Technical University of Munich. The study group has received a variety of awards, including the John Charnley Award from the USA Hip Society (twice), the Nicolas Andry Award from the ABJS, and the coveted Theodor Nägeli Award from the Swiss and German Society of Surgeons. ZOW and Klaus and Yvette Draenert have trained forty transplantation centers in Germany which are fully equipped with instrumentation.
