This text provides an historical background to midwifery, including government and select committee reports. The chapter on "Choice" focuses on accountability, autonomy and responsibility, as well as the Midwives Rules, and codes of professional practice/conduct. The chapter on "Continuity" deals with pre-NHS midwifery practices, the changes in th eemployment of midwives, and the relevant government influences on midwife practitioners. The chapter on "Control" discusses professionalism and professionalization, as well as advocacy, power and empowerment. Also covered are the ENB framework, the Higher Award, accreditation for learning and transfer of credits.
