Designed for diagnostic pathologists who need to interpret and report on orthopaedic specimens, this text covers all aspects of the pathology of bone and joint diseases and their diagnosis.
This is a practical book, designed for diagnostic pathologists who need to interpret and report on orthopaedic specimens. It covers all aspects of the pathology of bone and joint diseases and their diagnosis. The book consists of three main sections: a compendium of background information and instruction; disease processes and disease entities; and histopathological interpretation. Sections on practical guidance in tissue handling and preparation analysis and interpretation should be of particular interest to practising and trainee pathologists. Background and academic information, also of value to them, should make the book valuable to others, such as radiologists, metabolic physicians, rheumatologists and orthopaedic surgeons (particularly those working for the FRCS (orthopaedics) examination, and also to anyone concerned with the diagnosis of skeletal dysplasia for purposes of genetic counselling, for which there is a growing demand. Information on the histopathology of skeletal dysplasia is very limited, and an important objective of the book is to deploy that which is known and to encourage the collection of further information to a high standard.
The information in the text is easily accessible to the user, with a consistency of presentation and adequate cross-referencing and indexing. The basis of the illustrations accompanying the text are the standard radiograph and histological preparation, which are universally in use. Other images are used for exegesis (including technetium 99m polyphosphate bone scans, computerized tomographs, nuclear magnetic image resonance) and such special pathological preparations that are essential to diagnosis or aid in description. A problem oriented approach to differential diagnosis is stressed. This book should be of interest to pathologists and orthopaedic surgeons.
