Essentials of Robotic Surgery is designed to present a comprehensive and state-of-the-art approach to robotic surgery within the broad confines of general surgery. Sections address preliminary issues faced by surgeons who may be initially undertaking robotics. These areas include training, basic techniques and setup, as well as general troubleshooting. Subsequent chapters focus on specific disease processes and the robotic applications for those procedures. Written by experts in the field, each of these sections addresses patient selection, preoperative considerations, technical conduct of the most common operations, and avoiding complications. A brief review of the existing literature addressing the particular topic follows in each section. The text concludes with chapters on other robotic platforms beyond the only current FDA approved device (Intuitive Surgical) as well as future directions, including single-site, enhanced imaging, 3-D modeling, and tele-proctoring, including to and distant site surgery. Extensive illustrations and links to video make this an interactive text that will be of great value to general surgeons and associated sub-specialists, trainees including residents and fellows, fully trained surgeons looking to start a robotic surgery practice, and experienced robotic surgeons looking to expand the types of procedures that they currently perform robotically.

Matthew Kroh, MD, FACS is a surgeon in the Digestive Disease Institute at the Cleveland Clinic. He joined the staff after completing a General Surgery residency and a fellowship in advanced laparoscopic surgery and surgical endoscopy at the Cleveland Clinic. Dr. Kroh also holds positions with the Bariatric and Metabolic Institute and the Center for Surgical Innovation, Technology, and Education, located at the Cleveland Clinic's main campus. He is licensed by the State Medical Board of Ohio and board certified by the American Board of Surgery. His specialty interests include advanced laparoscopic surgery, bariatric surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, surgical endoscopy, and single incision laparoscopic surgery. Sricharan Chalikonda, MD completed his general surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic. He then completed a surgical oncology fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh and a minimally invasive surgery fellowships at the Cleveland Clinic. He is currently the Vice Chair of Surgical Operations and the Director of Robotic Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic where he started the HIPEC program. Since the inception of the program he has performed over 100 cases.

From the book reviews:

"The audience includes all levels of surgeons and surgeons-in-training. The authors hope the book will help residents develop an understanding of and gain a perspective on the fundamentals of robotic procedures while helping experts expand their robotics practice. ... This will be a welcome addition to any surgeon's library. Surgeons-in-training can develop needed expertise and experienced surgeons can find tips and tricks for their trade." (John C. Byrn, Doody's Book Reviews, January, 2015)
