Kelly A. Goudreau PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, FAAN, is Associate Director for Patient Care Services and Nurse Executive, Kansas City VA Medical Center, Kansas City, MO., and Associate Editor for Clinical Nurse Specialist: The Journal of Advanced Nursing Practice. She is also past President of the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS). She is licensed as a CNS in Oregon and is certified by the ANCC as a CNS in Adult Health. Dr. Goudreau has received honors from the Oregon Nurses Association, is a recipient of the Brenda Lyon Leadership Award and the President’s Award from NACNS, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing. She has published more than 30 journal articles and is co-editor for two books. Mary Smolenski, EdD, MS, FNP, FAANP, is a consultant, registered nurse, and family nurse practitioner with varied experience including graduate education, consulting, the military, primary care, independent practice, and association work with an emphasis on certification and accreditation. She is a Fellow of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners. Dr. Smolenski served as Director of Certification Services at the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) for 11 years, directing the certification and certification renewal processes for over 150,000 nurses. She has served on several non-profit boards: URAC, the Accreditation Council of the American Board of Nursing Specialties (now the American Board of Specialty Nursing Certification) and the National Organization of Competency Assurance (now the Institute for Credentialing Excellence-ICE). Dr. Smolenski has written numerous articles and given presentations on certification, competency, advanced practice nursing, and portfolios.
