Jeff G. Konin, PhD, ATC, PT, FACSM, FNATA is a professor and the Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island. He previously served as an Associate Professor and the Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, and as an Associate professor and the Assistant Athletic Director for Sports Medicine at James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia. He received his undergraduate degree in physical education in 1988 from Eastern Connecticut State University, Willimantic; a Master of Education in athletic training/sports medicine in 1989 from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville; and a Master of Physical Therapy degree in 1994 from the University of Delaware, Newark. He earned his PhD in 2004 in Physical Therapy from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale-Davie, Florida. Dr. Konin has worked in numerous high school, college, clinical, and professional environments. His experiences have included providing care at NASCAR and rodeo events; the Olympic Training Centers in Lake Placid, New York, and Colorado Springs, Colorado; professional baseball spring training; the American Basketball Association (ABA); professional baseball summer camps; USA Quad Rugby, as well as serving on the track and field medical staff for the 1996 Atlanta Committee for Olympic Games. Dr. Konin is and has been very involved in the athletic training profession. He has served as the Vice President and Newsletter Editor for the Delaware Athletic Trainers’ Association, and as a member of the Examining Board for Physical Therapy in the State of Delaware as the athletic training representative. He has also been a committee member for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Clinical/Industrial/Corporate athletic trainer’s committee and the reimbursement advisory group. For a number of years, Dr. Konin served as the NATA’s liaison to the American Physical Therapy Association. Dr. Konin served as a coauthor for NATA’s position statement on Pre-participation Physical Examinations, and currently is a member of the Best Practices Documentation for Athletic Training Work Group and the Professional Responsibility in Athletic Training Committee. Dr. Konin has published numerous articles, textbook chapters, and textbooks in the areas of sports medicine, athletic training, and physical therapy. He has also served as an editorial board member and in an advisory capacity to many journals and organizations. He is a frequent speaker on similar topics at state, regional and national meetings throughout the United States, and has also presented his work at conferences in the United Kingdom, Italy, Norway, Romania, Australia, Austria, and New Zealand. Margaret Frederick Thompson, EdD, ATC, LAT is an associate professor in the Athletic Training program at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia. She holds a BS degree in Health Science with a concentration in Athletic Training from James Madison University, where she also earned a Master of Science degree in kinesiology. Thompson received her Doctorate of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. A certified athletic trainer for more than a 20 years, she has experience as a high school athletic trainer and as an educator at the undergraduate and master’s levels. Other professional roles include past president of the Virginia Athletic Trainers’ Association and member of the NATA’s Component Relations Project Team. She lives in Richmond, Virginia.
