Both tooth decay (dental caries) and periodontol disease can be reduced or abolished by preventive practices. Written for both the dental student and the practising dentist, this text on preventive dentistry has been updated to include new chapters on oral mucosal diseases and oral cancer.
Twenty-five years ago most people accepted that extraction of teeth was an inevitable part of life. Now, this attitude has changed and an increasingly large proportion of the population has realized that oral disease can, to a very large extent, be prevented. Prevention of Oral Disease is the only book to consider the impact of prevention on each of the main oral diseases: tooth decay, periodontal disease, and disease of the oral mucosa. All aspects of prevention are considered: diet, fluorides, oral cleanliness, fissure sealants, oral health promotion and education, and the book provides an in-depth understanding of the early carious lesion and how to prevent it progressing. The prevention of oral disease is discussed and two new chapters deal with the prevention of oral mucosal disease (including oral cancer) and the prevention of trauma to teeth. The implication on the changing pattern of dental disease, and the impact on resources and treatment need, are reviewed. Throughout the book, Professor Murray emphasizes the scientific evidence on which the prevention of oral disease is based.
This book is intended for all undergraduate students, dental hygienists, postgraduate dentists, general dental practitioners.
