This text concentrates on highlighting key management issues and debates in both midwifery and obstetrics. Previously entitled "A Practical Guide to Labour Management", this book has been revised and the title changed to reflect the shift in emphasis towards a concept of flexible care in labour.
Assuming a sound basic knowledge of the process of labour, this book concentrates on highlighting key management issues and debates in both midwifery and obstetrics. The first part covers routine procedures and practices, including the labour environment, communication and the mother's emotional satisfaction with her labour. Basic practical issues are discussed, as are interventionist approaches such as artificial rupture of the membranes and active labour management. The book goes on to describe more specific aspects of labour management such as pre- and post-term labour, induction, monitoring and technology. The management of emergencies is addressed in the final section, and audit and risk management are also considered. It includes coverage of basic practical issues, such as posture, eating and drinking, water births, pain relief and fluid management. It is a practical guide providing all the information necessary to manage the day-to-day workload of a busy labour ward. It also includes a section on the management of emergencies and a new chapter on home births.
Previously entitled "A Practical Guide to Labour Management", this book has been extensively revised and the title changed to reflect the shift in emphasis away from pure obstetrics towards a concept of flexible, responsible care in labour from both doctors and midwives.
