This CD-ROM is based on the parent text of the same name. It provides an illustrated guide to clinical gastroenterology comprising gross and microscopic pathology, clinical photographs, endoscopic photographs, radiographs, anatomic drawings and linking text. The text discusses each area of the GI tract and hepatobiliary system, in terms of normal and abnormal anatomy, the aetiology and pathology of disorders affecting that area, and diagnostic and therapeutic options. Discussion of disease is provided within the context of the anatomy it affects. Emphasis is placed on explaining diagnosis and treatment. Users do not have to be experienced computer users, as the disk contains tutorials which provide all the information necessary to use the disk effectively. The interactive format incorporates rapid routing by use of "location maps", which enable the user to identify a particular section of the disk. The user can view illustrations in full or can zoom in for a close-up of a particular part of the image. The user can highlight or add information to any illustration or part of the text. Once it has served its purpose the additional information can be saved or deleted.
The user can call up around 20 images at a time for viewing on a split screen. Having made a selection of images from this array, the user can then call them up individually for fullscreen scrutiny. The text is scrolled through a pre-set window on the screen which is positioned next to the image it describes. The text, like the images, can be reviewed at speed. CD-ROM images can also be projected for lecture and presentation purposes: the disk contains a Lecture Compilation tool which allows the user to create lectures/presentations based on disk images and text.
