Tuberculosis is currently increasing in both the developed and developing world. It is often related to HIV prevalence, and the increasing problem of multi-drug resistant disease is becoming evident. Ease of travel and continuing high rates of tuberculosis in the developed world has made tuberculosis the potential problem of all health care workers. The principal aim of this text is to provide workers in the field of tuberculosis with a comprehensive review of the recent research published throughout the world, and to provide them with basic means of diagnosis, treatment and management of the patient with tuberculosis. As well as chapters on microbiology, pathology, clinical presentation of disease, treatments and prevention of disease, the book contains chapters dealing with specific problems of drug resistance, screening of immigrants, the problem of HIV-associated tuberculosis, and the issue of control in low- and high-prevalence countries. In addition, one section looks at new diagnostic measures in development. All chapters are fully referenced so that the interested reader will be able to pursue any topic relevant to tuberculosis as far as current knowledge is available.
