Examining the role of expert witnesses in the legal system, this book touches upon recent concerns with the role of forensic science in cases of "miscarriage of justice", including the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six cases. The author also analyzes the history of science and law.
Examining the role of expert witnesses in the legal system, this book touches upon recent concerns with the role of forensic science in cases of "miscarriage of justice", including the Guildford Four and Birmingham Six cases. This study analyzes the history of science and law, and attempts to demonstrate by use of modern and historical examples how lawyers routinely use science to secure convictions. It also examines the place of scientists in personal injury claims, and argues that in this area, as in the criminal field, those with power and money are able to secure the services of the best experts in order to win their cases. The book provides insights into the "behind-the-scenes" co-operation between lawyers and scientists in the pre-trial construction of cases.
