George L Bakris, MD, is a nephrologist whose specialty is kidney function/disease and hypertension. He has led several large NIH-funded studies resulting in paradigm shifts in blood pressure treatment guidelines for patients with treatable and challenging hypertension. Dr Bakris is Professor of Medicine and Director of the American Heart Association Comprehensive Hypertension Center at the University of Chicago in Chicago, Illinois. Matthew J Sorrentino, MD, a cardiologist whose focus is preventive cardiology, is Professor of Medicine at the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence and Vice Chair of Clinical Operations for the Department of Medicine at the University of Chicago. Both Drs Bakris and Sorrentino edited the current edition of Hypertension.
