An overview of stem cell research, which draws upon recent developments in both animal models and clinical applications. The focus for research purposes has been on the more primitive haematopoietic cells. Some topics covered are the purification of stem cells, the characterization of microenvironmental regulators, the use of stem cells as vectors of gene therapy, and the identification of different sources for these rare cells. Other approaches include stem cell transplantation in uteri and new sources of stem cells such as cord blood and foetal tissue.
