A comprehensive account of hepatic transport mechanisms, their physiological significance, and their role in liver disease. The text also examines the transport functions of the biliary tract and the transport disturbances involved in diseases such as hyperbilirubinemias and cholestasis.
In this volume, nearly 100 investigators present an account of hepatic transport mechanisms, their physiological significance and their role in liver disease. Major portions of the book describe the traits of the hepatocyte (liver cell) that enable it to perform its specialized transport function and thoroughly analyze the transport and metabolic processes that occur at the sinusoidal plasma membrane of the hepatocyte, within the intracellular compartments, and at the canalicular domain - the processes by which molecules from the systemic ciruclation are transported into the liver cell cytoplasm, modified, and then stored in the liver, reintroduced into the bloodstream, or excreted into bile. Other contributors examine the transport functions of the biliary tract and the transport disturbances involved in diseases such as hyperbilirubinemias and cholestasis.
